“Coming from within the universal and particular” is a reference to the five degrees teaching initiated by Dongshan. “Universal and particular” could also be translated as “true and partial,” “upright and inclined,” or “ultimate and phenomenal.”25 Here this signifies that Yunju’s practice had integrated the turning within of meditative awareness with engagement with the world, not turning his back on anybody right in his everyday activity with the other monks. Both ultimate suchness and the suchness in accord with changing phenomena are present for such a person in such a practice. After his comments, Dōgen simply asks his monks to go and continue such practice themselves.
